The E36 is such a great German design with great engines, good reliability, and a big enough aftermarket to make them viable today. Either the E46 or the E30. E46 is one of the best looking BMW ever made and it is the perfect combination of classic and modern. E30, because I like the look and the racing pedigree. There are two inherent problems with early e36's. 1. the rear subframe mounts are subject to cracking this problem was adequately corrected by 1996. 2. another problem that occurered on most e36s where upper ball joints go bad early usually around 60-70000 miles. drz. Yes, later model years will be more mechanically reliable. If you want OBDI for modding reasons, get a 95. I don't know that there were any big changes in models ranging from 96-98, but in general it will be better to get a newer E36 with mileage as good as you can find and preferably with service records. I have owned a 1992 & 1993 E36 and currenty own a 2003 E39. All cars were purchased new. The E36+SP+5 SPD has 100K on the odometer and is still in the fmaily. The E36 is a great car, but there is little value in spending money on major repairs when you can find a good-excellent condition E39 that will last many more years if taken care of properly. It should also be quiet and work in all weather and temperature conditions (for street use). Stock BMW pads, espeically on M models, have a lot of initial bite (touchy or sensitive brakes) which makes the brakes appear more powerful than they are. BMW took a lot of criticism for not offering multi-piston brakes in their M cars (like Porsche It’s rocking an S14 engine borrowed from the 320is E30, but with a Garrett turbocharger thrown in for good measure.
